YUMA, Ariz.—McCarthy Building Companies has successfully delivered the $17.5-million Matador Activity Center at Arizona Western College. The project, which topped out last spring, entails 45,000 square feet of space that is home to an esports arena, multimedia center, lecture hall, conference rooms and gaming area.

The school’s KAWC radio station and television studios are also housed under the same roof; people can observe the student broadcasters at work via a transparent wall. In addition, the Matador Activity Center also houses Andale’s Pantry, a food pantry and clothing donation effort for disadvantaged students.

“This building is for the students. It was planned and designed with students in mind,” AWC President Dr. Daniel Corr said of the project. “We hope it’s a place where they can connect, engage and thrive in their experience at Arizona Western College.”

McCarthy’s collaborators on the Matador Center included architect EMC2 as well as subcontractors Yuma Valley Contractors, Delta Diversified Enterprises, Pacific Steel Inc., Progressive Roofing and Haxton Masonry.

“The McCarthy team is proud to help make the college’s vision of an enhanced student engagement experience a reality with the completion of the Matador Activity Center,” Antonya Williams, business unit leader for the Education Group in the Southwest Region at McCarthy Building Companies, said of the AWC construction. “The project was not only completed on time and on budget, it has already received award recognition from [Arizona Public Service] for its energy savings and sustainability practices.

“We’re incredibly honored to have been part of bringing this new asset to the Yuma community.”

The Arizona Public Service (APS) Clean Energy Project Achievement award recognized the Matador Center for an estimated annual energy savings of 53,000 kWh, a carbon offset equivalent to 550 planted trees, reduced generation equal to 635,000 pounds of carbon eliminated and the equivalent of 161,000 gallons of water saved. Because of these efforts, the APS granted AWC a $9,300 rebate.

YUMA, Ariz.—McCarthy Building Companies has topped out construction work at Arizona Western College’s $17.5 million Matador Activity Center, which is due to open in the fall.

The two-story, 45,000-square-foot facility will feature conference rooms, cafeteria space, lecture hall, esports arena as well as an up-to-date multimedia center that will serve as the home of KAWC radio and television studios.Ěý Students and others will be able to observe production live as it happens via both traditional television monitors as well as glass walls outside the studios.Ěý The Matador Activity Center will also host a food pantry and clothing donation program to help disadvantaged students.Ěý Administrative space will be available on the second floor of the building.

“Achieving topping out on the Matador Activity Center is exciting and brings our objective of further contributing to the student experience at Arizona Western College and serving future generations closer to realization,” AWC President Dr. Daniel Corr said at the ceremony.Ěý “We’re thrilled to see the progress on the building, and look forward to opening it up to our students and staff this fall.”

McCarthy is working on the project with designer EMC2.Ěý Subcontractors on the project include Haxton Masonry, Delta Diversified Enterprises, Yuma Valley Contractors, Pacific Steel Inc. and Progressive Roofing.

In an emailed statement, Jakob Lund, project manager for McCarthy, said that an ongoing difficulty of the Matador construction has been the ongoing lack of trade workers, which has affected the construction industry across the board.Ěý However, Lund remains confident that he and his team can make their fall deadline—especially important as Arizona’s rather wet monsoon season will strike over the summer.Ěý

“The current weather conditions in the area combined with workforce challenges are impacting this aspect of the project—and have our teams working hard to maintain the schedule,” Lund said.

One of the most uniquely difficult hurdles is that the Matador Student Experience Center necessitates an antenna tower so that AWC’s programming can be beamed around to the Grand Canyon State.

“It’s been a unique experience to coordinate with the radio and TV stations to ensure that the structure supports the many different devices that will be mounted on it,” said Lund, adding that after careful work “it is correctly positioned for the transmissions.”

In addition to the Matador Center, AWC is also working on two other construction projects, a residence hall and a public safety training facility expansion.Ěý As all three of these buildings are being built—by different contractors—as the campus remains open, Lund said it requires no small bit of logistical work on everyone’s parts.

“It’s a very active campus from a construction and student, faculty and staff perspective,” said Lund.Ěý “The College is doing a great job facilitating the coordination, and we’re all focused on keeping everyone on campus safe.”

McCarthy, which has been in business for over a century and a half, has been ranked as the 19th largest domestic builder by Engineering News-Record.Ěý The firm is 100 percent employee-owned.

Schoology, a learning management system provider based in New York, will begin providing this interactive curriculum, which will consist of 32 semester-length courses aligned to the National Core Arts Standard, in fall 2015. Among the many courses soon to be available to students are classical music appreciation, theater history, elements of dance and photojournalism. The courses were developed by a large team of artists, educators and digital learning specialists, according to a statement by Schoology and HMAE, and are designed to give students the same level of interaction with the arts that they would experience in a traditional classroom.

Schoology was a good fit for the ambitious digital arts program thanks to its size, stability and global reach, according to a statement by HMEA. An estimated 8 million learners currently use Schoology in more than 60,000 K-12 schools and universities around the world.

“When we set out to create Mancini Education, we knew that we needed a system allowing us to create incredibly interactive lessons on any device and wanted to work with a partner dedicated to helping us meet our timeline goal,” said Sal Aloe, managing director of LPPAC, in a statement. “Schoology is perfect for developing and deploying our affordable arts curriculum for everyone regardless of budget or technology platform.”
