Green Schools on the Rise

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A green profile of 300 U.S. and 22 Canadian colleges and universities shows that many higher education institutions are putting their best green feet forward.
 
The College Sustainability Report Card 2011, an initiative of the nonprofit Sustainable Endowments Institute, reports that of the 300 colleges and universities in the U.S. with the largest endowments, more than half earned “B” level grades because of their strong green policies and practices in nine main categories.

School districts and architectural firms nationwide are pushing the envelope in green school design, seeking out new and efficient HVAC systems, lighting methods, water and irrigation tools, and other ways to make academic buildings lean and green.

Detroit Breaks Ground on $50 Million High School

DETROIT — The Detroit Public Schools system broke ground on a $50.3 million high school as part of the district’s $500.5 million capital improvement program aimed at closing unneeded schools and opening or updating new and existing facilities.
 
The 239,900-square-foot Mumford High School, situated on the city’s west side, will be one of three new high schools completed under the three-year capital improvement program, which was made possible through funds set aside by the Proposition S bond referendum passed in 2009.

• An initial mega-donation has been made for a new 200,000-square-foot law school to be built on the western edge of Syracuse University in Syracuse, N.Y. Officials announced that a $15 million donation was made by three siblings in memory of their parents who were graduates of the school. The largest donation in the history of the 115-year-old lay school kicked off a fundraising campaign for the construction project, estimated to cost $85 million – $90 million.
